Today is the first day of summer in the Northern Hemisphere. Information from calendar-updates.com -
In the United States and the rest of the northern hemisphere, the first day of the summer season is the day of the year when the Sun is farthest north (on June 20th or 21st). This day is known as the Summer Solstice.
The declination of the Sun on the Summer Solstice is known as the tropic of cancer (23° 27′). In the southern hemisphere, winter and summer solstices are exchanged so that the Summer Solstice is the day on which the Sun is farthest south.
A common misconception is that the earth is further from the sun in winter than in summer. Actually, the Earth is closest to the sun in December which is winter in the Northern hemisphere.

This is more of a survey than a blog post, really. I am asking my readers what you plan differently for your lives in 2008. What is in store for you? Have you made any resolutions? Leave a comment.
I can’t say I have made any resolutions specifically. This year will be a very busy year for me at work. Next month, a special “someone” from Brazil is coming here. I will be traveling and doing a lot of projects for work this year.

If you can read this post, Dreamhost doesn’t suck as bad as it normally does. Over the last few days, there have been problems with many of the sites that are hosted on Dreamhost (including this one.) We are plagued with errors such as “Firefox cannot find site such and such”, or the venerable Internal Server Error… Well, Dreamhost is an employee-owned company. Spend less money on beer and more on your servers
Carlos’s blog in Portuguese is complaining about the same thing Good luck accessing his blog.

Carlos and I had many ideas about what domain we would choose for this weblog. We finally decided on booksontables.com because it would be memorable by Portuguese and English speakers- our intended audience. There is an on-going joke in Brazil, that the only thing said in English is “the book is on the table.” There has been some music (quite awful) called “The Book is on the Table”, and there are some idiots that were on a Brazilian sitcom that “spoke English,” but all they said was the book is on the table, the book is on the table. So…. there you have it; the etymology of “booksontables.”
